Augmented dysfunctionality is a state of affairs characterised by a growing lack of service, care and support on the level of the everyday. Simultaneously, the value of functionality is skyrocketing, turning a convention into a luxury commodity.
Since my practice is concerned with ageing, devaluation, dying, disruption as well as repair, I wonder what is the future of campy practices in the face of a commercialisation of the dysfunctional. Art institutions have picked up notions of „not working“, „dropping out“ or „failing“ which should serve as a warning sign.
This pillow isn’t (serving as) a pillow to you. This shelf is a „shelf-shelf“. Get it? Conservatism is the power of framing.
Whenever I get too paranoid, I pick up Eve Sedgwick to remind myself with Melanie Klein, that the depressive position is one of hope. I quote: „the depressive position is one from which it is possible in turn to use one’s own resources to assemble or „repair“ the murderous part objects into something like a whole. Once assembled to one’s own specifications, the more satisfying object is available both to be identified with and to offer one nourishment and comfort in turn.“
